In Craven County, only 52% of our students are proficient in reading by the end of 3rd grade, which aligns with the state and national averages - but this is not enough. We can no longer use the state or national averages as our standard for preparing and equipping our children for the classroom or the workforce.
We know better, and we must do better.
The NC General Assembly passed the Parents Bill of Rights in 2023, making it law, for ALL public schools in North Carolina. There are school systems refusing full implementation, and even Craven County Schools system is taking a tip-toe approach to implementation. This is the front used to allow our children to pick their own pronouns and reassign their gender.
Parents have a fundamental, God-given right to know ALL things between their child and the schoolhouse, and our school board must demand FULL IMPLEMENTATION of the Parents Bill of Rights - to protect our parents AND children.
Patriotism, American Exceptionalism and the importance of our Founding documents matter to me, and they should matter to every Conservative. We must fight to keep the founding principles in our classrooms and curriculum. Removing and replacing American history in our schools with narratives such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a way for the liberal agenda to indoctrinate our schools and our children.
In recent years, we have increased dependency on electronic devices and minimized the importance of developing career, college and military readiness (students can operate an app on an iPad, but are not prepared to navigate basic Office computer software, such as word processing and spreadsheets).
We know better, and we must do better.
Social Emotional Learning, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is another favorite vehicle used by the liberal left to indoctrinate our schools and our children. By definition, NC Department of Public Instruction attests that it is the school's job to develop the competencies of "self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making" in our children. These things are baked into the core curriculum at every turn.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
IS NOT A NORTH CAROLINA GRADUATION REQUIREMENT,
and our school board must demand that it is removed from our curriculum.
Currently, Craven County Schools still promotes SEL and DEI on the district website.
Teacher vacancies in Craven County are at a historical high, and a level not being felt by our sister counties in Eastern North Carolina. RECRUITMENT and RETENTION should matter to us as stakeholders.
Overcrowded classrooms and limited course offerings are not a winning strategy for students, teachers, or our community.
We know better, and we must do better.
